Ipoh Walk Around Day 02


FOOD HUNT 02 - Ming Court Dim Sum
8th FEB 2015
Early morning, around 7.30am, the sun haven't rise,
my friends and I woke up and started our second food hunt!
Ming Court Dim Sum is located at Jalan Leong Sin Nam.
This restaurant have been serving delicious Chinese food.
They operates daily except Tuesday, start from 6am to 12pm.

Various type of Dim Sum
Dim sum is a Cantonese or Hokkien food 
prepared as small bite-sized or individual portions of food traditionally
 served in small steamer baskets or on small plates.
It has various type which give customer more choices to try different taste.

Char Siew Pau (Pork Pau)
Xiu Mai (dumplings)
Lo Mai Gai (Glutinous Chicken Rice)
Sesame Paste, Char Siew Pau, Xiu Mai and Lo Mai Gai
 is the most famous plate that you must try in Ming Court.

We manage to interview one of the owner of the shop.
Miss Yap told us that they have variety type of dim sum,
different customer have different favourite dim sum plate.
Their dim sum is still using the traditional way to make it,which is hand-made,
which make thier dim sum special because this keeps the taste of  dim sum.
The price is also reasonable, so I recommend Ming Court for it's Dim Sum.


After breakfast, we went to Flea Market at Jalan Horley.

My friends and I accidentally found out this piece of art when we are heading to a flea market.
In Ipoh, you can spot a few wall art mural in different corner.

Pet Shop
While we are lost in the way of finding the flea market,
we passed by a pet shop.
That vibrant parrot attracted our attention.
We took some pictures before we leave.

Destination 03 - Ipoh New Town Flea Market
8th FEB 2015

Finally we reached the Flea Market
Memory Lane (Flea Market)
This flea market is only open on Sunday morning till afternoon 2pm.
People call it Memory Lane.
It is located along Jalan Horley and Jalan Lim Bo Seng.
It is the largest flea market in Malaysia.

You can find many antiques item in this market. 
Some are selling secondhand items.
You can have interaction with the stalls' owner to know more about the antique they sell.
You can get many old stuffs or second-hand stuffs from a great range of items in the market.
There are shoes, books, magazines, kitchenware, accessories, CDs and many more.

I am more interested in the antiques such as iron that works with charcoal, basket, old radio, typing machine and many more. I got the chance to see many old things.
It's really a great place to shop around for those who are fancy about antiques.

Old Man drinking Ipoh White Coffee - Wall Art Mural
This wall art mural is the easiest to spot!
It's so big and obvious as there is no building blocking it.
When you saw this art piece, then you will know you are in 
Ipoh Old Town



FOOD HUNT 03 - Cendol Padang Ipoh
8th FEB 2015
Cendol Padang Ipoh

Cendol Padang Ipoh is located at Jalan Tun Sambanthan.
It is special because they are not just serving traditional cendol,
they added new element into their cendol, which they call it special cendol.

They also serve ais kacang, drinks, rojak and more.

Oreo Cendol
It's so yummy and suitable to enjoy it during hot afternoon.
We have tried traditional cendol and also a special cendol with oreo.
At first we feel that nothing so special about the oreo cendol,
but once we taste it, it is really nice!
The cendol served by them is rich with santan.
You can taste the fragrance of the santan.

FOOD HUNT 04 - Nam Heong Coffee Shop
8th FEB 2015
Nam Heong! To get the most delicious White Coffee
Nam Heong coffee shop is opened by a Hainanese in 1958.
It is the first coffee shop which start selling white coffee.
It is located at Jalan Bandar Timah.
It is open daily from 6am to 6pm.
The owner is sitting in the middle.
The owner's daughter is the person who established Old Town White Coffee Cafe.
Both cold and hot white coffee from Nam Heong taste good.
It cost RM 1.70 for the cold one and RM 1.40 for the hot one.
The shopkeeper is Hakka, he is very friendly.
The shop is pack and full with customer.
The flow of customer doesn't stop!

Egg tart from Nam Heong Dim Sum
We have asked the shopkeeper that what food is special over here.
He recommended the egg tart.
The egg tart cost RM 1.70 each.
The outer part is crispy while the inner part is smooth and soft.
It's really delicious
They can sell around 100 pieces a day.

The shopkeeper has provide us the information we want 
and he treat us the egg tart for free!

FOOD HUNT 05 - Thean Chun Coffee House
8th FEB 2015
Thean Chun coffee shop is the first shop which serve egg custard.
The owner is a Cantonese. The shop has already open for 30 years.
The shop is located at Jalan Bandar Bijih Timah.
It is oepn daily except Thursday, from 8am to 4.30 pm.

Caramel egg custard
Thean Chun is the first cofee shop which start the custard business.
It costs RM 2.50 for each plate.
It is made by egg, the egg is to be steamed.
It is very slithery, you can swallow in one gulp.

Ji Dan Cha (Chinese herb tea with egg)
This is the shop special menu too.
The Chinese herb tea is served with an boiled egg.
It costs RM 1.50 a bowl.

The process of making it is very easy.
First,put in an boiled egg.
Next, pour in the herb tea till it fills the bowl.
House of Mirror
Before it is develop as a coffee shop, this shop is a barber shop.
The mirror on the wall is the proof.
Because of the long wide mirror, Thean Chun gain a name called "House of Mirror"

FOOD HUNT 06 - Bits & Bobs Ice Ball
8th FEB 2015
Bits & Bobs @ Plan B, Sekeping Kong Heng
 Plan B is a combination of nostalgic and modern building.
It is located at Jalan Panglima.
There are many activities over there, such as art market, cafe and hostel.
Bits & Bobs is located at the art market.

There is various type of flavour.
There are many flavours, but the shopkeeper will recommend the original flavour,
which is with Malacca sugar syrup and lychee.

The ice is rolled into a ball
Bite the Ice!
The ice is rolled into a ball and drench with the syrup.
To eat this ice ball, you have to bite the ice or suck the melted ice syrup.
It's quite an innovative way to enjoy Ice.
But you have to be careful as if your eating speed is slow,
you will get drench by the melted syrup!

Better you sit down and enjoy your ice at the seating area the shop provided to avoid getting dirty.

Plan B
When plan A doesn't works, just go for Plan B!
Plan B is a combination of nostalgic and modern design.

Taking break and explore Plan B after a long day of walking
After a long day of walking to hunt for food in Old Town,
my friends and I reached Plan B and have a break over there. 
There are quite a lot of activities going on at Plan B.
This is the counter for hostel check-in
There are rooms at the upper level of the building
The cafe at PLan B is serving breakfast and main course
There is  boutique selling fashion clothing
There is also a library, behind of the library is toilet.
The environment there is so nice that you can just post to get nice photograph!
Any corner at Plan B can be your posting background.
This place is wonderful!
People who likes handicraft items must visit this market!

Visitors can have fun and take photos with the speech bubble

Around 4pm, our other friends aslo started to gather at Plan B
We depart back to our hotel after that.

Returning back to Ipoh New Town, our food hunt still continue!
We went to a few more shops in New town.

FOOD HUNT 07 - Funny Mountain Tau Fu Fa
8th FEB 2015
The most famous Tau Fu Fa in Ipoh
Funny Mountain Tau Fu Fah is located at Jalan Theatre.
Their business already run for 63 years, 3 generation.
Before that, they are just selling at the road side,
they have just move into a shop lot 2 years ago.
It was started by the owner's mum.

Tau Fu Fah
Tau Fu Fah is a Chinese jelly made by soy bean served with sweet syrup.
It is very slithery and smooth.
You can taste the fragrance of the soy bean with some sweetness from the syrup.
It costs RM 1.20 a bowl.

Our Malay friend Hakim first tried Tau Fu Fah.
He likes the smoothness of the jelly.
Workers are serving the Tau Fu Fah in bowls and tupperware
They can sell 2 buckets of Tau Fu Fah in one day.
They start operate at 10am till the Tau Fu Fah is sold out.


FOOD HUNT 08 - Sin Eng Heong Pastry Shop
8th FEB 2015
Famous Kaya Puff can be found here!
After Funny Mountain, we visit Sin Eng Heong pastry shop.
Sin Eng Heong is located behind Funny Mountain Tau Fu Fah,
which is Jalan Mustapha Al-Bakri.

The owner of the pastry shop
The owner is a Hokkienese.
The owner started the business by doing wholesale for 50 years.
After that, he opened a shop for business and it already operated for 10 years.

Kaya Puff
Their handmade kaya puff is very famous.
The outer layer of the puff is very loose while the kaya inside is very tasty.
It costs RM 4.50 for 5 pieces.

The Kaya Puff is arranged at a oven tray rack to let it cool down before packing. 
They produce around 3000 pieces fresh kaya puff a day.
The flow of customer never stop until they are closed.
Their operation hour is:
Monday - Saturday : 9am to 8pm
Sunday : 9amto 6pm

FOOD HUNT 09 - Aun Kheng Lim Salted Chicken
8th FEB 2015
The shop just provide take away
Aun Kheng Lim have been serving best salted chicken for 21 years.
The shop doesn't have seats, they just provide take away.
It is located at Jalan Theatre.
They operates daily from 10am to 6pm.

The heaps and mountains of boxes containing the delectable, savoury chicken !
Their chicken box is sold non-stop when the shop opens.
You might need to book earlier if you doesn't want to miss out the salted chicken
when you travel to Ipoh.
When the wrapping paper is open, w can smell the herb flavour immediately
The chicken used is Kampung chicken.
It is wrapped in paper and bake with rock slat to get the aroma and flavour.
The flesh is very tender that you can just tear with your bare hands.
It costs RM 18 a box, which can serve 4 person.

After having the salted chicken as dinner,
we are totally exhausted because of the whole day food hunt.
Tomorrow will be a more adventure day!
Got to recharge for tomorrows Theme Park Experiencing.
