Green Building - sustainable technology

What is Green Building?

Green building are integrated framework of design, construction, operations and demolition. They minimize the usage of energy, water and other natural resources.
This benefits community by providing healthy and productive environment.

Main technology used:
1. Increase efficiency of resource use
2. Reduce waste of resources

ParkRoyal Hotel, Beach Road, Singapore

In a dense city like Singapore, ParkRoyal Hotel is a linear building arrangement with less room but many interesting outdoor features. The exterior of the building are glasses. The reflection of sky on the glass created an illusion of invisible.

It is called as a hotel-in-garden as floating landscaping is applied to the building. The hotel has sky garden, water features, waterfall, planter terraces and garden walls.
It is constructed with energy saving and sustainability practices. The building is 30% energy saving.

Technologies Applied to the buildings:

1. Greenery: As ventilation openings for car park.

2. Cobiax Technology: It is a construction method using hollow spherical void formers (recycled plastic) within concrete slab.
The purpose is to reduce the dead loads of slab and usage of concrete.
It also increased the construction productivity.

3. Natural ventilation: Corridors are shaded by tropical tress and flanked by water features.
The purpose is to reduce usage of air-conditioning.

4. Photovoltaic Cell Array: To supplement energy and powers lighting during
night for sky garden

5. Glass Wall Panel: From floor to ceiling are glass panels in rooms and public area. The purpose is to gain maximum daylight for public area and reduce usage of energy for artificial lighting.

6. Reflected Materials: The interior of the hotel has many mirror. The purpose is to reflect the artificial lighting to reduce usage of energy.

7. Photo Sensors: The sensors are installed at common area to monitor the light levels and usage by reducing the intensity or turning off when the area is not used.

8. Energy Savings: Use heat pumps to supply hot water rather than electricity.
Use LED lighting and T5 fluorescent lighting.

9. Water Conservation: Rainwater is collected from the roof surface and stored in a water tank.
The water is used for landscaping by drip irrigation system.
Rain sensors are installed to prevent wastage of the water in tank.

Additional Information
ParkRoyal hotel management encourage guest to involve in recycling. They prepared a recycle bin and a waste bin in all rooms. This is a good act to give opportunity to people to gain awareness of living green.

Conclusion

Looking through the list of technologies the architects applied in the construction of ParkRoyal Hotel,
we can identify that the building is an eco-friendly and sustainable design.
