FOOD HUNT 10 - Roti Telur Goyang

Our Last day in Ipoh.
We visit Old Town again and have our breakfast there.

This Food Stalls are temporary stall located above a parking lot.
It is operate by 2 sisters.
They have run their business for 27 years.
They start operate from 4am till 4pm.

The roti telur goyang is a toasted bread spreaded with butter with half boiled egg on top.
The fragrance of butter and the taste of egg blends well with the bread.
The word Goyang means shake.
Telur goyang is actually describing the shaky half boiled eggs on the bread.
It costs RM 2.70 per plate.

Destination 07 - Sekeping Kong Heng

Sekeping Kong Heng is a accommodation place with adaptive reuse design.

Adaptive reuse is reusing an old site or building for a purpose other than which it was built or designed for. Along with brownfield reclamation, adaptive reuse is seen by many as a key factor in land conservation and the reduction of urban sprawl.
The design is exposed, which leave the raw material without finishes.
Metal and stone material can be seen everywhere.

Sekeping Kong Heng has a lot of wonderful architecture element which conserve the environment and save energy. The building is high natural ventilated and it drained water out to protect the soil from erosion and minimize the load which the building have to bear.

Sekeping Kong Heng provide 3 type of rooms
The first one is the Glass box at rooftop.
People who like adventurous life will definitely love this room design.
The bathroom is so transparent, but no worries, there is curtain to provide privacy.
The second room is the Standard room.
The room give a very cozy feel.
After a tiring day walking around in Ipoh, I think this will be the best place to rest.
The third room is Family room.
It can fit around 6 person.
The room gives more feel of warm.
There are a lot of openings which allows the wind to flow in the room.
Not just providing accommodation, there is also many interesting activity on the ground level.

No 1- Plan B Coffee Shop
People who loves the coffee aroma will enjoy having a breakfast or tea time here!
No 2 - Hawker Stalls
You can find food, art and craft at the stalls.
No 3 - Art of Sand
There is a small stall at the courtyard.
You can make a bottle of sand art and bring home as gift.
No 4 - Fashion shop
Poeple who likes fashion, no worries!
Sekeping Kong Heng provide you a shop with cool stuff about fashion.
No 5 - Reading space
There is a small reading area with some books.
Simply grab a book and you may spend up an afternoon to refresh yourself!
No 6 - Indian Barber shop
You can have a haircut and experience the old style barber chair.
If you are not interested to have a haircut, you can get a massage from the barber!
It's cool and comfortable

You can also take photo in the shop with the barber as memory.
There is no certain payment for any haircut, taking pictures and so on,
but there is a donation box where you can donate an amount as you wish.
This is to support the shop for the owner to earn for living.

Some people might feel that the 3 type of rooms been introduced above is too expose.
Well, no worries, there is some more rooms which have more privacy for users.
It is located in an old block.
There is a mini courtyard at the center of the block.
It allows natural light and ventilation to flow in the rooms.
We have visited 2 rooms.
Which is 1 o'clock and 2 o'clock.
The rooms have a strong feeling of house living compare to the previous rooms.
Room 2 o'clock can fit 4 person. there is a mezzanine bed above a mini living area.
A mini kitchen is also provided.
The bathroom is not included in this room.
Users have to use the sharing bathroom outside.
It can fit 2 person. Bathroom is included.
A mini pantry and a living area is provided too.

Secret garden @ rooftop
There is a garden at the rooftop.
It is manage by Mr David himself.
The design of the garden is nice.
This small pathway leads you around the garden.
Mr David has shared us about his experience how he start this garden.
He said that he has met a lot of difficulties when he start this garden.
The main problem is about the the load.
To build a garden on roof, the load bearing of the building have to be consider.
Mr David has introduced us a material call perlite.
It is very light weight and can absorb water.
It is mixed with the ground soil to reduce the load on the rooftop.
We do learn many things from this tour in Sekeping Kong Heng@Ipoh.

Destination 08 - Kellie's Castle

Kellie's Castle is located near Batu Gajah, and is about 20 minutes' drive from Ipoh, Perak, Malaysia. The unfinished, ruined mansion, was built by a Scottish planter named William Kellie Smith.

He brought in 70 craftsmen from Madras India. All the bricks and marble were imported from India, too. Included in the plan for the 6 storey tower was Malaya's first elevator, an indoor tennis court and a rooftop courtyard for entertaining.

Unfortunately William Kellie Smith died at the age of 56 due to pneumonia during a short trip to Lisbon, Portugal in 1926. The building is half-constructed and left over.

The admission fee for foreigners are RM5 and
Malaysia RM4 and RM3 for adults and childrens respectively.
Destination 09 - Tin Mining Museum

Entrance of Kinta Mining Kongsi
After Kellie's Castle, we have our last visit destination at Kinta Mining Kongsi.
The museum has many information shown in many interactive ways for visitor to know about the history of Ipoh's tin mining.
The legendary elephant which found tin.
It was said that one of the penghulu's elephant was lost one day.
When the elephant came back, they found out that it's body has something shining.
And that is how people realize there is Tin in Ipoh and started the tin mining industry.

There is some display with explanation for visitors to understand how a tin mining industry work and it's evolution.

There is also human model display setting to show how is the living of the people who work in tin mining area. It brings the history alive.
Overall, this trip is really fun and amazing.
I have learn new things and explore one of the town in Malaysia.
Travelling is a way for designers to get inspiration by interacting with different people and experience different culture.
